Shaily's Design Notebook: How We Pick What Goes Into Every Collection
This is the first in a series I'm starting where I walk through the actual decisions behind our collections — not a polished brand story, but the real back-and-forth that happens before a design goes into production.
Where a Collection Actually Starts
It's rarely a single inspiration moment. Most of our strongest-selling collections started from a pattern in what our existing wholesale buyers were asking for — three different retailers independently asking for lighter daily-wear rings in one month tells us more than any trend report.
The Question I Ask Before Any New Design: Who Reorders This?
It's easy to design something beautiful that sells once. The harder, more useful question is what gets reordered. A piece that's comfortable for daily wear, doesn't tarnish, and photographs well on a small budget setup tends to outperform a more dramatic piece that looks better in a single hero shot but doesn't hold up to daily use.
Where I Push Back on My Own Ideas
Not every design instinct survives contact with production reality. A design might look right on paper but cost more in finishing time than the price point supports, or need a stone-setting technique that adds days to the timeline for a marginal visual difference. Part of the job is knowing which details are worth the cost and which aren't.
What's Different About Designing for Private Label vs. Our Own Line
When we're designing for a private label partner, the process starts with their customer, not ours — their price point, their brand aesthetic, their existing bestsellers. It's a genuinely different exercise from building our own collection, and it's the part of this work I find most interesting: figuring out what someone else's customer actually wants, then building toward that.
What's Next in This Series
I'll be sharing more of this — real decisions, including the ones that didn't work out. If there's a specific part of the design or manufacturing process you're curious about, I'd genuinely like to hear it.
