Is Your Jewelry Export-Ready? Cadmium, Nickel & Compliance Explained
"Export-ready" gets used as a marketing phrase, but it has a specific, checkable meaning — and getting it wrong is expensive: shipments held at customs, retailers returning stock, or in the worst case, market bans on your brand.
I'm Shaily, design and brand lead at Kesardeep Impex. Here's what actually matters if you're planning to sell into the US or EU.
Cadmium and Nickel: The Two Restrictions That Matter Most
The US and EU both restrict cadmium and nickel content in jewelry — nickel because of widespread skin allergies (the EU's REACH regulation sets strict limits on nickel release), and cadmium because of its toxicity. This isn't a minor technicality: products that fail these checks can be refused entry or pulled from shelves after the fact.
At Kesardeep, our jewelry is manufactured cadmium and nickel free specifically so our private label and wholesale partners don't have to worry about this at the border.
Questions to Ask Any Manufacturer Before You Commit to Export
- "Is this cadmium and nickel free, and can you confirm that in writing?" A manufacturer who hesitates here is a risk, not a partner.
- "What testing or documentation do you provide?" Even without a formal lab certificate, ask what quality checks happen before dispatch.
- "Have your products cleared customs in my target market before?" Track record matters more than a claim on a homepage.
What "Compliant" Doesn't Cover
Cadmium/nickel-free is necessary but not sufficient. Depending on your market, you may also need to think about hallmarking requirements (purity marking for silver), correct customs documentation, and import duties specific to your destination country. These are usually the buyer's or freight forwarder's responsibility rather than the manufacturer's, but it's worth confirming who owns what before your first shipment.
Why This Matters More As You Scale
A single held shipment early on is a headache. A pattern of compliance issues as you scale into new markets is a brand risk. Building this into your manufacturer vetting from day one costs nothing and saves a lot later.
