How to Start a Jewelry Brand With a Manufacturer
Most guides on "how to start a jewelry brand" are written by marketing teams who have never stood on a factory floor. This one isn't.
I'm Shaily, the design and brand lead at Kesardeep Impex. We manufacture 925 sterling silver jewelry in Jaipur and work with private label founders every week — from someone launching their first 20-piece Shopify collection to established retailers scaling into six figures. This is the guide I wish existed when I was figuring this out myself: specific numbers, specific questions, no filler.
Step 1: Decide What You're Actually Selling
Before you talk to any manufacturer, get specific about three things:
- Category: daily wear, bridal, minimal/demi-fine, statement fashion — pick one to start. Trying to launch across all of them at once is the single biggest reason first collections underperform.
- Metal and finish: 925 sterling silver, gold-plated silver, or a mix. Anti-tarnish plating matters more than most first-time founders realize — it's the difference between a five-star review and a return.
- Price point: this determines your manufacturer conversation more than anything else. A ₹500 daily-wear piece and a ₹5,000 bridal piece are different supply chains, different MOQs, different finishing standards.
Step 2: Understand MOQs Before You Fall in Love With a Design
This is where most guides go vague. Here's what "low MOQ" actually means in practice at a Jaipur manufacturer like ours:
- Small collections can start well below the bulk-discount thresholds — you don't need lakhs of rupees to place a first order.
- Discounts typically kick in around the ₹2.5 lakh mark, with stronger bulk pricing past ₹5 lakh.
- If a manufacturer won't give you a straight answer on MOQ by piece or by category, that's a red flag — it usually means pricing is negotiated case-by-case rather than structured.
Ask directly: "What's your MOQ per design, and does it change if I mix designs within one metal/finish?" A manufacturer who answers in one sentence has their production organized. One who needs three follow-up calls does not.
Step 3: Get the Timeline in Writing
Vague timelines are how launch dates slip. A realistic private label production timeline looks like:
- Design/sample approval — this can move fast if you're choosing from an existing catalog (some manufacturers offer 3,000+ ready designs) or slower if you're doing full custom CAD development.
- Bulk production — typically 20–35 working days from confirmed order to dispatch for standard sterling silver runs.
- Shipping — plan separately depending on domestic vs. export.
Ask directly: "What's my dispatch window from the day I confirm the order — not from the day I first inquire?" Those are two different clocks, and vague manufacturers blur them.
Step 4: Ask About the Things Nobody Puts on the Homepage
Every manufacturer's website says "quality" and "trusted." That tells you nothing. Ask these instead:
- Is the jewelry cadmium and nickel free? This isn't optional if you're exporting to the US or EU — it's a compliance requirement, not a nice-to-have.
- What photography do I get with my order? Product photos are often the single biggest hidden cost for a new brand. Some manufacturers include high-definition white-background photos per design as part of the order — ask before you budget separately for a photographer.
- Can I actually put my brand on the packaging, or just the product? Private label and white label are not the same thing. Confirm which one you're getting.
- What happens if a design goes out of stock mid-scale? This is the question that separates manufacturers who think about your business from ones who only think about the transaction.
Step 5: Start Smaller Than You Think You Need To
The instinct with a first collection is to go big to "make it worth it." Resist that. A tighter first order — one clear category, a handful of your best designs — gives you real sell-through data before you commit real capital. Reorder into what works.
The Real Differentiator Isn't the Manufacturer. It's the Relationship.
Every Jaipur manufacturer will tell you they offer quality, customization, and reliability. What actually determines whether your brand launch goes well is whether your manufacturer treats your first small order with the same seriousness as a wholesaler's fifth reorder — because that's the order that decides if there's a second one.
That's the standard we hold ourselves to at Kesardeep. If you're building a brand and want to talk specifics — MOQ for your exact category, real timelines, real samples — reach out for a wholesale enquiry.
